The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a flash flood warning on Sunday afternoon for eastern Miami-Dade County, an area that includes Ultra, one of the world’s premier EDM festivals.
At 3:57pm, Doppler radar detected thunderstorms producing heavy rain over the region. Between one and three inches of rain had already fallen, with another one to three inches expected. The weather service warned of possible flash flooding, with standing water already reported in parts of downtown Miami.
Ultra, held in Bayfront Park along Biscayne Bay, has continued after the festival’s organizers temporarily paused it and released a statement urging attendees to “please seek shelter.” They resumed the event shortly thereafter and have not announced any further delays or evacuations at the time of this article’s publication.
Miami officials advised residents and visitors to avoid flooded streets and seek higher ground if necessary. The downpour comes as tens of thousands of festivalgoers descend on the city for Ultra’s final day, featuring performances by some of the biggest names in electronic dance music, including Martin Garrix, deadmau5 and Zedd.
Last year’s Ultra was also marred by bad weather. Authorities evacuated the festival on its first day after Miami received 2.34 inches of rain, a daily record for the city at the time.
The flash flood warning is set to remain in effect until 6pm. Ultra is scheduled to conclude at 10pm.
